Bilbao

Ted. With its huge airport, Málaga serves as a good base to explore other parts of Spain.

Like many European nations, Spain is an amalgam of different “countries,” each with it’s own culture and dialect. Last week, we explored, for the first time, a section in the extreme northeast called the Basque Country.

This area is so different, they even have their own language. Nobody knows from where the people, or their language (which they call euskara) come. Linguists do not believe it is an Indo-European language so there are no connections to Latin, Celtic, Slavic or any other language families in Europe today.

We began our visit in Bilbao, the largest city in the region. Our first day was spent exploring a bit of the old town, enjoying a fabulous lunch and wandering around the world famous Guggenheim Museum. By the way, I would encourage you to visit the museum’s incredible website at guggenheim-bilbao.eus/en. Here are some snapshots.
