After squeezing into our Fiat 500 Cabriolet, we headed for the hills above Bermeo, a small town on the Atlantic coast (more precisely, the Bay of Biscay). We had booked a night at an “Agroturismo” (farm stay inn) called Lurdeia. Five farmers (brothers maybe?) had built a small inn on a their farm to supplement their income.
The place was cozy and the guys dressed in traditional Basque outfits to serve us breakfast. We loved it and enjoyed getting to know a nice couple from Virginia named Doug & Laurie.
After our morning farewell, we traveled down to the coast to visit a tiny islet called Gaztelugatxe.
With an 11th century chapel at the top and magnificent views, it was apparently reconfigured by a computer artist into “Dragonstone” for the TV series Game of Thrones.
To get there, one must hike down a steep hill to a bridge, cross it and then hike back up.
We took lots of water breaks but made it. Much of the time, we walked with an 86 year old Basque woman and her son. Not only did Juanita do just fine, she did it without any water. Humbling!
From Gaztelugatxe, we wandered the hills stopping briefly in Guernica to view a mural based on Picasso’s famous painting.
We broke for lunch in the village of Ziortza-Bolibar which turned out to be the home of the ancestors of Simon Bolivar.
Then it was more mountains, beautiful coast roads and ultimately into San Sebastian, our next destination.
