Ted. We’ve
been back in the States for two months now and, while this has been a great
visit, I am really looking forward to our next journey.
Since our return, we have had good visits with most of the folks we miss, notably our two children
and their families. While our three grandsons are thriving in our absence they
seem to like having us around. The four-year-old, Caedmon, was sitting on the
back porch with Judy last Saturday evening when he said, “The cicadas are
singing because they are sad to see you leave. They want you to stay another
month.” Alas, that is not meant to be and they will have to contend with
“boomerang grandparents” for the foreseeable future.
Our many friends have been
extremely gracious as well. We enjoyed numerous meals and homestays and
received several more invitations for our return this autumn. We have been
flattered by the many accounts of people actually reading our blog. Foolish me;
I thought this was just a journal for us to read once our traveling days came
to an end.
We enjoyed being back in the
South during the summer, especially when hiking in our beloved North Georgia
mountains. We discovered several new restaurants and had some great home cooked
meals – reminding us that there are only two things that money can’t buy; true
love and home-grown tomatoes.
So, we leave tomorrow for a
three-month trip. After a brief stay in Denver to visit family, we’ll head to
Washington State and British Columbia for a month. We fly from there to Hawaii
for two weeks and then travel to Mexico for six weeks.
This last stop will give us
an opportunity for a bit of immersion in the Spanish language. While I speak
some German and both Judy and myself are comfortable in French, our Spanish
needs a lot of improvement.
Judy has taken to saying that,
“Home is wherever Ted is.” I wasn’t sure I understood that but believe I’m
starting to get it. While it will be good to return to Georgia in November, it
feels good to lean forward in the saddle now and enjoy the anticipatory
pleasure of more adventures.
